In the heart of Alexandra, Johannesburg, Sister Idah Makgalemele leads with compassion and purpose as the facility manager at the Eastbank Health Clinic in Region E. Her journey through healthcare in Joburg is a powerful example of resilience, wellbeing, and professional growth.

Born in Turfloop, Limpopo, and raised by a single mother in Edenvale, Sister Makgalemele learned early on the values of resilience, accountability, and integrity—traits that continue to guide her both as a mother and as a healthcare leader.

Inspired by community nurses who served with dedication, she pursued a four-year diploma in general nursing, psychiatry, and midwifery, which she completed in 2011. After interning at Edenvale Clinic, she furthered her qualifications with a postgraduate certificate in Primary Health Care from Potchefstroom University in 2014. She joined the City of Joburg's health department in 2016 as a primary healthcare nurse and now manages Eastbank Clinic, where she has worked for nearly four years.

Her work includes overseeing clinic operations, managing staff, addressing patient needs, responding to emergencies, and ensuring that every resident receives timely, quality care. She also resolves patient complaints and produces reports, all while creating a welcoming and respectful work environment.

Sister Makgalemele's earlier experience at a healthcare NGO dealing with chronic conditions shaped her adaptability and commitment to continuous learning—key in today's evolving health landscape. “Healthcare is dynamic, and I strive to stay informed about new diagnoses and treatments," she says.

Known for her warm and approachable manner, she encourages open dialogue among staff and strives to bring out the best in her team. Her leadership style reflects her belief in empathy, collaboration, and excellence.

Outside of work, she enjoys hiking, ice skating, reading motivational quotes, and spending time with loved ones. “I'm a homebody at heart," she shares.

Looking to the future, she envisions a digital shift in patient record-keeping and advocates for health and wellness initiatives that can uplift communities. Her personal motto, “Don't be a follower; stay true to yourself", captures her approach to both life and leadership. Sister Makgalemele is a proud example of how healthcare in Joburg is driven by passion, professionalism, and a deep commitment to community wellbeing.
