02-10-2012: Joburg clarifies the issue of former Pikitup's Acting MD

The claims being made in several media reports today (Tuesday 02 Oct.) about the former Acting Managing Director of Pikitup are unfortunate and misleading.

The reports suggest that the former Acting Managing Director of Pikitup has been fired for reasons which have nothing to do with the performance of his

duties at the entity.

It is unfortunate that these reports are selectively based on a statement issued by the South African Municipal Trade Union and have deliberately omitted

the contents of a statement issued by the City of Johannesburg –last Friday regarding the appointed of Managing Directors at both Pikitup and Joburg Water.

The City wishes to dismiss these unfounded claims and wants to place it on record that Mr Lawrence Boya was not fired, instead his contract has expired. It

is a well known fact in media circles that all heads of the City’s Municipal Entities are employed on a fixed term contract.

As stated in the media statement issued last Friday, the appointments of senior officials to various department and Municipal Entities are part of the

City’s Institutional Review Process (IRP) which seeks to ensure that the City achieve its goal of creating a world class African city.

The IRP aims to align the activities of the City to the Growth and Development Strategy (GDS) – Joburg 2040 which will result in an effective and modern

system to strengthen accountability, oversight, transparency and corporate governance.
