2009-07-17: Quality health care as Protea Glen Clinic opens its door

Protea Glen residents in Soweto today welcomed the official opening of their R3.5 million, Protea Glen Clinic by the Member of the Mayoral Committee in the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Matshidiso Mfikoe.

The need for permanent health care delivery in the area was identified in 2007 because services were offered from a mobile clinic, which operated only on certain days. In 2008 the City of Johannesburg Health Department saw the need to have a new clinic in Protea Glen.

The construction of this clinic was started in September 2008 and the completed project was witnessed in May 2009.

Councillor Matshidiso Mfikoe said, “I am proud to say that we have made great strides in bringing health services closer to our people so that you do not have to travel many kilometres to the nearest clinics. We will continue despite all the challenges to redress health inequalities by ensuring that facilities are properly staffed and have the necessary resources to function effectively”.

The Protea Glen Clinic will provide the following services:

Reproductive Services including Family planning
Mother and Child Services including Immunization
Comprehensive Antenatal services
TB treatment and staging of HIV positive clients
Treatment of sexually transmitted infections
Comprehensive PHC services
Voluntary counseling and testing
The opening of the clinic is part of the City’s ongoing programme of ensuring access to primary health care services across the City of Johannesburg.

These initiatives are being complemented by the refurbishment of clinics such as OR Tambo Clinic, Nokuphila Clinic, Jeppe Clinic, Riverlea Clinic and Yeoville Clinic. This will strengthen the delivery of primary health care services closer to our homes and ensure that minor ailments are taken care within walking a distance from people’s house.
