2009-06-25: JW replacing water meters in Orange Grove

JOHANNESBURG Water (JW), the water and sanitation service provider for the City of Johannesburg wishes to inform residents living in Orange Grove of a project to replace old and malfunctioning water meters in the area.

The primary objective of this project is to replace old water meters with new meters. The scope of work entails the installation of approximately 1416 new meters with all the associated pipe work in the Orange Grove area. In addition, meters will also be moved from inside properties to sidewalks. At a total cost of R2.5 million, the project to replace the old meters will reduce maintenance and associated costs. Furthermore, the entity is investing additional R1,5 million towards the replacement of water meters  and chamber covers for top 100 customers such as industries, hospitals, businesses and schools to name a few.

The projects started in May 2009 and expected to be completed by July 2009. Johannesburg Water is aware of the problems that are caused by old and outdated municipal water infrastructure, and it has put comprehensive programmes in place to upgrade and rehabilitate municipal water and sanitation infrastructure throughout the City of Johannesburg.

Johannesburg Water does not foresee any service disruption relating to water supply to the residents during the replacement except for shutdown in individual stands during meter installation. The company will, however, notify residents at least 48 hours in advance should any planned water interruptions occur as the result of work being undertaken to complete the project.

Johannesburg Water is committed to improving the level of water and sanitation services and appeals to residents to contact its 24hour call centre on 011 688 1500 to report both water and sewer service related problems.
